Many sisters have asked me similar questions: \”What should I do if my children are not paying attention to their studies?\” For a long time, I have been thinking about, or even struggling with, this issue. Because Ogawa also has this problem. The fundamental reason for his slow progress in learning Chinese chess is that he cannot sit still. I couldn\’t concentrate for a long time in lectures, I looked around while playing chess, and I moved around and dilly-dallyed when doing questions. Playing chess and solving problems with him every day is a kind of torture with no end in sight for me. There are two reasons that kept me from giving up and not getting angry. First, I have been an \”inattentive\” person since I was a child. Since I was in elementary school, almost every teacher has complained to my mother: \”I keep making little moves in class. One moment I touch the eraser, another moment I turn the pencil around, and the next moment I don\’t know where I saw it.\” Myself I know the problem goes beyond that. When I am alone in a daze, I often wander and \”daydream\” and make up all kinds of messy stories. Looking back now, it was my mother’s discipline that supported me in studying all the way to my PhD. It was my mother’s discipline at first, then my self-control, and finally my interest. Not to mention my mother’s discipline, it’s “too numerous to describe”. After a serious illness in junior high school, I suddenly had an epiphany and realized the importance of studying hard. From then on, I relied on my willpower to suppress my restless heart, forced myself to \”concentrate\” on my studies, and finally got into a pretty good university. This was still the case at the beginning of college, so although the results looked good, I was not happy inside, and could even be said to be anxious and painful. Later, I gradually realized how interesting and meaningful professional learning is (actually it was not my first choice), and I really got involved. Then, one day, I suddenly found that I no longer needed to force myself to concentrate, and I was no longer anxious. I believe that I can do it, and so can Xiaochuan. Second, as long as you find the child\’s interest points, he will concentrate. Ogawa\’s \”inattentive\” state once made me wonder if he had attention deficit disorder (ADD, there is another way of saying it, ADHD). Worried, I went to check the information and read relevant books. At present, Ogawa cannot be defined as a distracted child. But I got a lot of inspiration from the materials and books I read, some of which can be used to help children overcome inattention and improve their concentration. There is a sentence that particularly impressed me. Dr. Edward Hallowell, an authority in the field of attention deficit disorder, wrote in the book \”Teach Distracted Children This Way\”: In the world of distracted children, the highest criterion is: What is the most interesting? , rather than what is best, you have a hard time teaching a distracted child what is best. In fact, even if they are not distracted, it is not the same for children who have not yet developed sufficient self-control. Ogawa can\’t sit still while doing the questions, but he can play Lego for 2 hours and read N books in one sitting (not to mention cartoons, you can watch them for as long as you want). He simply likes them. The final experience of my own example is also like two words. It is painful to use self-control to force ourselves to concentrate. Similarly, if we force our children to learn things that they are not interested in or like, they will also suffer. Therefore, what we try to do is to make learning as interesting and fun as possible, so that children will naturally concentrate. Attachment: In the Sight Words Hunting game, just talking about the concept is not enough. Let’s take an example of English learning. Learning English words is a very boring thing. I only started learning English in junior high school. I remember that the teacher often gave us assignments to copy words 10 or 20 times in order to make us memorize words. Xiaochuan has been learning phonics for some time and has mastered some words, phrases and short sentences, but is not very proficient. I want him to practice more, but I also know that for children of his age, boring memorizing words, writing words, phrases and short sentences is not suitable. He will not be able to persist and will not be able to maintain his attention for a long time. So, I DIYed a Sight Words Hunting game (it seems that I got the initial inspiration from a board game I saw on Amazon, but I couldn’t find it, and I didn’t read the game manual, so I had to redesign the game process and rules myself). The purpose is to help children understand and become familiar with the most common words (sight words), phrases and short sentences in English through games. 1. Required teaching aids: Sight Words flash cards and handmade paddles 2. Teaching aid production process: Word flash cards There are ready-made flash cards on the market, and we can also make them ourselves. It is very simple. I used packaging cardboard to make the flashcards, which are relatively rough, but the advantage is that you can freely design the content. The Sight Words written above were selected from the book \”The Complete Book of Sight Words\” based on Ogawa\’s recent study. When writing words, it is best to use pens of different colors to distinguish names, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc., to facilitate emphasis with children. Handmade small swatters are made of cardboard (I used a shoe box) cut into several small swatters in the shape of fly swatters. 3. Game process: Entry level: Sight Words Hunting: Lay the word flash cards flat on the table, we say a word (for example, look), let the child quickly tap it with a small paddle, and let him read the word aloud. One thing to note is that whether the child finds it or cannot find it, it is best to repeat the word, its meaning, pronunciation and spelling to the child. Advanced level: Sight Phrase Hunting lay the word flash cards flat on the table, we say a phrase (for example, big car), let the child use a small beat to quickly tap the words contained in the phrase, the words are correct and in the correct order, and let him speak loudly Read out the phrase. No matter whether the child does it correctly or not, confirm with him every time, including the meaning of the phrase, the order of the words, the meaning and pronunciation of the words. Advanced version: Sight Sentence Hunting lays the word flash cards flat on the table, we say a short sentence (for example, who are you?), and let the children use a small beat to quickly tap the words contained in the short sentence. The words are correct and in order. Correct and have him read the short sentences aloud. Regardless of whether the child did it correctly or not, it is best to confirm with him again, including the meaning of the sentence, the order of the words, the meaning and pronunciation of the words. Note: The game is overDuring the process, some words, phrases and phrases that are unfamiliar to one or more children should be strengthened through conscious repetition. Try to let other family members or invite friends to join the game to make it a competition. The children will be more motivated and have more fun. (I lost my voice due to a cold and cough recently, so I couldn’t record the video. Sorry.) Of course, not all learning needs to be turned into games. Just think of ways to make things more fun, especially for children. Even for children, there will be earth-shaking changes. Ogawa\’s recent performance has made my worried heart feel a little calmer. The one-on-one video English class has started to become a little more serious. The number of swaying left and right and looking around has decreased, and the communication with the foreign teachers has also developed smoothly. It took me a while to concentrate on the questions. Dad Chuan and I were working, and he sometimes sat next to us and could do 20 minutes of Chinese chess questions. Although it is only a small improvement, he will still have spikes on his butt after a long time in class and homework. But at least it gives me hope. If you can take small steps now, you may reach thousands of miles in the future. Dr. Edward Hallowell has another point of view that I have always insisted on and agreed with: love your children for who they are, and try to remember this when the process of educating your children does not go well. See clearly the child\’s characteristics, give him more love, patience, time, and more skilled companionship, and he will make positive changes.
