What is alpha-fetoprotein screening (AFP)? Used to measure alpha-fetoprotein levels in the mother\’s blood during pregnancy. AFP is a protein normally produced by the fetal liver, found in the fluid surrounding the fetus (amniotic fluid), and crosses the placenta into the mother\’s bloodstream.
